Kratom is also known as the Mitragyna speciosa Korthals. It is a tropical plant found in Southeast Asia. Kratom has traditionally been used as a medicine for aches and pains and fatigue. In Kratom, you will find alkaloids, active substances that have their effects on the human nervous system. There are many different types of Kratom on the market, classified by the colour of the main vein of the leaf used or by the plant's growing location. This article will therefore take a closer look at the different Kratom strains and the unique effects that each one brings.
Different types of Kratom based on colour
Based on the colour classification, you can find 4 different Kratom varieties:
- White Kratom (White Vein Kratom)
- Red Kratom (Red Vein Kratom)
- Green Kratom (Green Vein Kratom)
- Yellow/Gold Kratom (Yellow Vein Kratom/Gold Kratom)
Different colours of Kratom produce different effects. This is due to the amount of mitragynine in the leaf, the most active substance in Kratom. The concentration of mitragynine determines the unique effects per Kratom colour.
White Kratom
White Kratom is made from leaves with a white leaf vein, which have a young age. These leaves contain very few alkaloids, giving this Kratom a stimulating effect. Kratom with a white leaf vein makes you feel both alert and calm. In addition, you can count on effects such as: motivation, concentration and stamina. It is best to take White Vein Kratom at the beginning of the day, otherwise the uplifting effects will make you sleep restlessly. Popular white Kratom varieties are: white Bali and white Maeng Da.
Red Kratom
Red Kratom is made from older leaves of the tropical plant. These leaves also have a red main vein. Red Vein Kratom is known for its potency and strong effects. It brings calmness and works quickly. Moreover, it gives you a sense of well-being and optimism. Kratom with a red leaf vein also relaxes your muscles and body and relieves aches and pains. It is best to take red Kratom in the evening after work. It calms you down and promotes good sleep. Red Borneo and Red Maeng Da are popular red Kratom varieties.
Green Kratom
Green Kratom is the golden mean of Red and White Kratom, meaning that this Kratom strain is made from semi-ripe leaves with a green leaf vein. Green Vein Kratom provides effects on mental and spiritual levels. It is a mild remedy to boost your energy, it can give you euphoric feelings and helps increase your alertness and focus. Kratom with a green leaf vein also provides relief from pain and other discomforts, but without the drowsiness that painkillers normally bring. Well-known green Kratom strains include Green Malay and Green Bali.
Yellow Kratom
Yellow/gold Kratom gets its name not from the colour of the leaf vein, but from the unique drying process of this Kratom strain. This Kratom is made from semi-ripe, green-veined leaves like the Green Kratom. Only now, these leaves are hung in the sun for several days to dry. This removes chlorophyll from the leaves, which creates the green leaf colour. This leads to a golden yellow colour. Gold Kratom is harder to find than the other Kratom varieties, as it is only produced in small quantities.

Usage and dosage of Kratom
Traditionally, Kratom leaves were used to chew or smoke them. Nowadays, however, we more often incorporate Kratom into tea, as the alkaloids enter your bloodstream faster via water. The boiled water does not harm the active substances in Kratom. You can easily make tea from both the powder and the leaves, and the tea can be drunk hot or cold. An average dose is between 3 and 5 grams of Kratom. For stronger effects, you can take a dose of 6 to 10 grams.
