Pep is another word for an amphetamine drug, which mainly produces energy-boosting effects. In the Netherlands, pep is sometimes used during nightlife because of the happiness and energy you get from the drug. In this blog, we will therefore talk a bit more about what exactly is pep and what effects and side effects should you consider?
What is pep in the sense of drugs?
Many people are not familiar with the term pep. However, pep is another word for amphetamine or speed. It is a drug with stimulant effects, which is consequently widely used at festivals and parties to make the user happy and give lots of energy. Pep is manufactured in white or yellow powder, but is also available in capsule or tablet form. Therefore, the drug pep is mostly used at parties, where it is mainly taken nasally or orally. In a few cases, it is sprayed.
What is PEP?
PEP is not the same as pep. A PEP drug is a four-week course of HIV inhibitors. It prevents you from getting HIV after having unprotected sex. You have to start the PEP cure within three days of unprotected sexual intercourse. You don't always get PEP after unprotected sex, only when the risk of HIV is high.
Is there a difference between speed and pep?
There is not really a difference between speed and pep. Both terms are used to refer to amphetamines, such as 3-MMA or 2-FEA. However, speed is often the brand name for a specific amphetamine: amphetamine sulphate. Pep is often used as a generic term for several amphetamines.
Effect of a pep drug
Pep is often snorted in powder form or taken orally as a bomb. When snorted, the effects take effect within minutes; with a bomb, the effects take a little longer. The total duration of effects is between four and eight hours. Pep produces happiness hormones in the body. These substances, dopamine and noradrenaline, stop you feeling tired and make you happier.
What does pep do to you?
Pep is a stimulant used for a variety of purposes. Possible effects of pep include increased concentration and more energy. Moreover, you feel euphoric and excited. In addition, pep takes away your fatigue and you feel less urge to eat, which is why some people even use it to lose weight. Pep also makes you happier and more inclined to social interaction. Finally, pep has a beneficial effect on your libido.
Risks and side effects of taking pep drugs
There are risks associated with regularly taking pep as a drug, such as:
- Weeks of anxiety
- Weeks of confusion
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Sleep problems
- Psychosis
- Overheating
- Heart problems
- Uncontrolled movement

Pep addiction
If you have been taking pep more than twice a month, the chances of developing a pep addiction are significant. This is because pep makes you psychologically addicted. You keep working towards your next dose and when you can't take it, you become very restless and suffer other withdrawal symptoms, such as:
- Fatigue
- Muscle pain
- Depression
- Insomnia
- Cravings
- Wanting to eat more
- Reduced focus
- Restlessness
- Anxiety
- Perspiration
- Shivers
However, pep is not physically addictive; only mentally.
Pep is a powerful drug with stimulant effects, but it also carries serious risks and side effects, including a high risk of addiction. It is therefore important to be aware of the choices you make around the use of stimulants. Want to learn more about drugs and their effects?
