How long does Lorazepam last?

How long does Lorazepam last?

When you visit your doctor for medication to treat anxiety or sleep problems, you will often be prescribed lorazepam. This is a medication with a calming effect. Lorazepam belongs to the benzodiazepine class of drugs. In this blog, we will take a closer look at the beneficial effects of lorazepam and discuss how long lorazepam actually works.

What is lorazepam?

Lorazepam is a medication classified as part of the benzodiazepine drug group. As a result, lorazepam is well known for its calming and relaxing effects. For this reason, doctors prescribe lorazepam to treat anxiety disorders, epilepsy, or insomnia. In the Netherlands, it is commonly sold under the brand name Temesta and is only available with a doctor's prescription. Like other benzodiazepines, lorazepam affects the neurotransmitter GABA. This medication enhances the effects of GABA, a chemical that helps suppress stress and anxiety. GABA slows down activity in overactive brain regions, helping you feel calm and relaxed more quickly and for a longer period.

How long does lorazepam last in your system?

The exact duration of lorazepam’s effects depends on factors such as dosage and individual tolerance. But how long does the medication typically last? Like other long-acting benzodiazepines, such as diazepam, lorazepam has a relatively long duration of action.

  • The first effects, such as drowsiness and muscle relaxation, occur about one hour after ingestion.
  • The total duration of action is approximately 8 to 12 hours.
  • A standard 1 mg lorazepam tablet typically works for 8 to 12 hours.

If you take more than the recommended daily dose, the effects may last even longer. When prescribed, lorazepam treatment is usually recommended for a maximum of two to four weeks.

What are the effects of lorazepam?

Lorazepam is known for its calming and relaxing effects. The precise effects depend on factors such as dosage and frequency of use. Possible effects include:

  • Reduction of anxiety
  • Relaxation of the body
  • Inducing sleep
  • Reduction of stress
  • Sedation
  • Prevention of epileptic seizures

Risks and side effects

Like any medication, lorazepam comes with risks and side effects. The biggest risk is the development of physical and psychological dependence. Over time, you may require higher doses to achieve the same effect, and stopping use can lead to severe withdrawal symptoms. Additional side effects may include:

  • Decreased focus
  • Impaired coordination
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Memory problems
  • Drowsiness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Blurred vision
  • Emotional numbness
  • Skin reactions
  • Mood swings, which can lead to depression

Mixing lorazepam with alcohol

It is strongly discouraged to take lorazepam with alcohol. Both substances cause drowsiness and sedation, and combining them intensifies these effects. This can lead to extreme drowsiness and confusion. If you accidentally take an overdose of lorazepam and mix it with alcohol, you risk falling into a coma, which can be fatal.
