The 5-MeO-DMT experience: what are its effects and risks?

In the world of psychedelic substances, 5-MeO-DMT is a fascinating and powerful compound. Often compared to DMT, this substance is known for its profound spiritual experiences and intense effects on the mind. In this article, we will review the 5-MeO-DMT experience, effects and risks.

What is 5-MeO-DMT?

5-MeO-DMT (N,N-Dimethyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a psychedelic drug belonging to the class of tryptamines. Researching more about this class of psychedelics? Check out this page for our other tryptamines. It can be found endogenously in some plants, small amounts in humans, but mainly in a specific kind of toad. Nowadays, the drug is also produced more frequently in labs, which means it can be counted among research chemicals. The drug is not used recreationally, but as a research tool or in spiritual contexts to achieve spiritual enlightenment and healing.

Difference between DMT and 5-MeO DMT

5-MeO DMT is often compared to DMT, but is four to six times stronger than this drug. DMT, on the other hand, is more visual and you get less euphoric feelings from it. Moreover, DMT lacks the mystical experience and loss of ego. 5-MeO DMT is nicknamed The God Molecule for a reason. 5-MeO DMT is also not the same as 5-BROMO-DMT. Where does it come from?

The synthetic production of 5-MeO-DMT dates back to 1936, but its natural occurrence remained limited to certain plants until 1965. That year, researchers made a groundbreaking discovery: the compound was also present in the skin secretions of a desert toad native to Arizona. This finding sparked new interest in the substance. In 1983, a pioneering psychedelic researcher ventured to Arizona to conduct experiments with the toad's venom, subsequently publishing a pamphlet detailing his 5-MeO-DMT experience. Despite these developments, it wasn't until the turn of the millennium that many countries worldwide began implementing regulations on the use and trade of this potent research chemical, recognizing its potential for both scientific study and misuse.

How does it work?

5-MeO-DMT is similar in chemical structure to the neurotransmitters serotonin and melatonin, allowing it to find itself at the receptors of serotonin or 5-hydroxytryptamine. This is how the substance creates its characteristic psychedelic effects. What its further effects are cannot yet be said with certainty, but it is also suspected that the chemical triggers the inhibition of monoamine reuptake.

5-MeO-DMT experience

The effects of 5-MeO DMT are similar to DMT itself. Possible physical effects are therefore:

  • Sensual feelings
  • Feeling of intoxication
  • Spontaneous feelings
  • Muscle twitches
  • Sense of being heard through, for example, singing, speaking and laughing

Mentally, the research chemical also produces some striking effects. The average 5-MeO-DMT experience speaks of a death of ego, feeling of infinity, feeling of being able to fly, changing perspectives, visual experiences, spiritual experiences, euphoric feelings and loss of time awareness.

5-MeO DMT experience: the risks

Due to the intensity of the drug, there are also some risks associated with the psychedelic. One 5-MeO DMT experience is that it can make you quite anxious. Moreover, the drug does not mix with other drugs, medications or alcohol. Other typical risks include:

  • Drooling
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Feelings of gloom and lethargy
  • Feeling detached
  • Anxiety
  • Worry

Suitable dosage

5-MeO DMT can be taken in several ways. You can inhale the drug through your nose. This produces a long, but less intense experience. A good dosage, when you are just testing it out, is 3-5 milligrams. If you take it with a vaporiser, for instance, you get a shorter but more intense experience. 1-2 milligrams is sufficient. Oral intake is strongly discouraged, because 5-MeO-DMT is orally active and because of its potency it is very dangerous to take it by mouth. This could lead to seizures or hypertension.
