3-MeO-PCE is a synthetic dissociative substance belonging to the arylcyclohexylamine class. It is known for its powerful effects and is often compared to substances such as ketamine and MXE. In this article, we discuss what 3-MeO-PCE is, how it works, its effects and user experiences, dosage and duration, side effects and risks.
What is 3-MeO-PCE?
3-MeO-PCE, or 3-methoxyeticyclidine, is a synthetic substance belonging to the arylcyclohexylamine class. It is an analogue of eticyclidine (PCE), another dissociative substance. It shares many of the same properties, such as causing dissociation and hallucinations. 3-MeO-PCE was developed as an alternative to other popular dissociatives, such as ketamine and 3F-PCP. Which are often used for their powerful, psychedelic effects. The substance works by acting on the NMDA receptors in the brain, leading to a disruption in the way the brain processes information. Resulting in dissociation, changes in perception of time and space and visual hallucinations. However, 3-MeO-PCE often has a stronger effect than some other dissociatives, with a longer-lasting experience. Users report both positive and negative experiences. With effects ranging from spiritual insights to confusion and anxiety at higher doses. It is important to be careful with dosage and environment.
How was 3-MeO-PCE developed?
3-MeO-PCE was developed as a synthetic analogue of eticyclidine (PCE), a substance belonging to the arylcyclohexylamine class. The chemical structure of 3-MeO-PCE differs from PCE in that a methoxy group has been added at the third position of the phenyl ring. This addition affects the way the substance binds to receptors in the brain, resulting in changes in perception, consciousness and motor functions. The methoxy group makes 3-MeO-PCE more potent and provides a longer and more intense experience than PCE. This has an effect on its dissociative and hallucinogenic properties, often making it seen as a more potent alternative to ketamine and PCP.
What are the effects of 3-MeO-PCE?
3-MeO-PCE is a dissociative substance belonging to the arylcyclohexylamine class. The effects of 3-MeO-PCE can vary depending on dosage and individual sensitivity. At lower doses, stimulant and euphoric effects are often experienced. While higher doses can lead to dissociation, hallucinations and changes in perception of time and space. Users report that 3-MeO-PCE is less intense and easier to handle than some other dissociatives.
- Increased heart rate and blood pressure
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loss of motor control and coordination
- Increased sensitivity to pain
- Euphoria and increased creativity
- Changes in time perception
- Increased music appreciation
- Decreased memory function and delayed thinking
- Enhanced colours and visual acuity
- Changes in perspective and surroundings
- Hallucinations and geometric patterns
It is important to note that 3-MeO-PCE can lead to psychosis and mania at higher doses. It is strongly not recommended to study this substance in high doses, several days in a row or in combination with other substances that increase the risk of psychosis.
3-MeO-PCE experiences
Users of 3-MeO-PCE report varying experiences. Some describe the effects as profound and spiritual, with intense visual hallucinations and a sense of connection. Others experience the effects as overwhelming and difficult to handle. For example, one user reported that after snorting 60 mg of 3-MeO-PCE he entered a ‘friendly dream world’, but also that more than 24 hours later he had accidentally snorted 5 mg, leading to closed-eye visual hallucinations.
User 1: ‘Holy Shit, what an experience!’
The user decided to take an 8-10 mg dose of 3-MeO-PCE, thinking it would not be too strong. He describes that he immediately had an intense experience, where his house became completely unrecognisable and he started seeing ‘blurred people’. The visual hallucinations were strong and the experience felt surreal. What stood out was that he was barely in control of his steps, as if he was moving like a character in an old Charlie Chaplin film. This brought a funny element, but it also made it difficult to function. He noticed that his body moved very slowly. The user began to worry about a possible overdose, but remained calm, drinking plenty of water and taking benzodiazepines to calm himself down. Eventually, he realised that the effects were mostly mental and that it just needed some time to work out. The trip eventually ended without a real ‘bad trip’, although it was a strange and intense experience. This was his first time having a dissociative trip.
User 2: ‘What a state’
This user took 1 small point of 3-MeO-PCE around 18:00. After half an hour, he noticed nothing, so he decided to take a few more larger amounts. After a while, he started noticing the effects getting stronger, but it took longer than expected. By 20:00 he was in a state he described as similar to using ketamine, but with more psychedelic effects. He noticed that his head kept turning in the wrong direction and he started hallucinating, not remembering how he got outside to smoke his joint. The user found the experience both confusing and amusing, with visual hallucinations continuing. He thought he was moving between different realities, but felt no panic. He remained calm and reported that it was ultimately a very strange but not necessarily negative experience. He suspects he had taken between 20 mg and 25 mg, which advised him to purchase a proper scale for the future. For most users, the experience is a mix of hallucinations, dissociation and change in time perception. However, it is always important to be careful with dosage and be well prepared, especially with these powerful substances.
Dosage and duration of 3-MeO-PCE
The dosage of 3-MeO-PCE varies depending on individual sensitivity and experience. A general guideline is:
- Threshold: 2 - 4 mg
- Mild: 4 - 8 mg
- Medium: 8 - 15 mg
- Strong: 15 - 25 mg
- Heavy: 25+ mg
The effects usually occur within 3 to 15 minutes, with a peak after 1.5 to 2 hours. The total duration of the experience is about 3 to 5 hours.
Side effects and risks
The use of 3-MeO-PCE carries several risks and side effects:
- Increased heart rate, raised blood pressure, nausea and vomiting.
- Anxiety, paranoia, confusion and hallucinations.
- Chronic use can lead to addiction and psychotic episodes.
It is important to be careful when using 3-MeO-PCE and always choose the right dosage and setting. 3-MeO-PCE is a powerful dissociative substance with potentially intense effects. It is essential to be well-informed about the dosage, effects and risks before deciding to use this substance. Safety and responsibility should always come first.
