Hemp is a plant, which has been used for years as an agricultural crop, textile material or food. Yet you cannot buy hemp in the Netherlands, because hemp is included in the Opium Act. This is because the plant falls under the cannabis plants, from which narcotics such as weed, marijuana and hash are also grown. What is hemp?

For more cannabis plants, the police can confiscate the plants and the grower can be prosecuted. As a result, you may not manufacture, possess or trade in these products.

However, hemp is also often used in oil form or in textiles, rope, seeds and other products. For example, hemp oil is good for hair and hemp seed is a superfood. In these forms, products made from hemp are allowed, provided the THC content in the hemp remains below 0.05%.

What is THC?

THC is the component of the hemp plant that provides the high when hemp is used as a recreational drug. Tetrahydrocannabinol provides the psychedelic effects in cannabis and marijuana, for example. The terms cannabis and hemp are often used interchangeably, but usually cannabis refers to THC-containing products. Hemp items, for example, contain more CBD, CBC and CBDA.

What does hemp do?

How is cannabis ingested?

The best known way to ingest products from the hemp plant is to smoke them. This is also called blowing or throttling. The cannabis or hashish is crumbled into a rolled cigarette with tobacco. Weed or hash can also be smoked pure in a stick. In addition, you can choose to smoke in a pipe, in a water pipe or with a vaporizer. You notice the effects of cannabis after a few minutes and can last up to 2-4 hours.

Sometimes cannabis or hash is incorporated into edible products, such as the famous space cake, or into beverages such as tea. In food and drinks, however, it is more difficult to maintain a proper dosage. Moreover, the effects occur more slowly, since THC enters your bloodstream through your digestive tract much later than with smoking. The first effect can take between one and four hours. However, the effects also last longer.
